The week of midsummer I saw a sight that reminded me that winter was gone. When
kids, or anyone else, loses a mitten or a glove, it is a custom to stick it up
on a pole or someplace where it can be seen and recovered. The glove never found
its owner and was still stuck on the pole. It does not show up as well against a
background of flowers as it does against a snow-covered field.
A reminder of the miserable winter days that have past ... and morbidly you think "midsummer is the longest day of the year ... from then on out, the days get shorter again and we are headed back into those cold, miserable, dark days."
